http://bbc.cpdn.org// This project apparently just started and is associated with BOINC and Climate Predictor. Look at their link above and I think you'll find a wonderful, simplistic, and very well marketed 'how to' install and why guide for dummies. They picked up 3k hosts in the past 24 hours(from just 15k) according to boincstats.com Incorporating some of their features in all of the BOINC home pages would help add new users. It's a highly inviting approach they are using on their page. There's even a short streaming movie people can view explaining the basics. I'm not sure how viable this option is in regard to bandwith but I'd like to see it looked into.... Would appreciate some feedback from the project developers. I was quite pleased to see that on the CPDN website late last night, glad you posted. It would be nice if more of the media spoke of, and cooperated with, BOINC projects. Sadly, in my area of the states we only get BBC world news and their radio news service. I hope this draws more attention to CPDN and BOINC projects; it's a good step forward. Thanks for drawing attention to this, Mike blog pictures |

I think some of the things CPDN learned while doing this "side" project for BBC are going to end in BOINC (especially in the BOINC GUI). Professor Desty Nova Researching Karma the Hard Way |

... It would be nice if more of the media spoke of, and cooperated with, BOINC projects. ... That needs work by the projects. It is no coincidence that the CPDN TV broadcast was on the BBC - one of the lead universities of the CPDN project is the UK Open Uiniversity. As a distance learning establishment the OU already has a double relationship with the BBC, with the BBC broadcasting some programmes for OU students, and the BBC producing videos that are sent out as part of the OU course materials. I am guessing that CPDN used its OU component which in turn used its existing contacts with the BBC to get this going. In addition, notice that CPDN were willing to devote a sub-project to the TV station, so that there is a publicity payoff for the BBC there too. Without the special contacts it will be harder for other projects, of course. However my point is that nothing like this will happen unless the project makes the first move and works out a payoff for the media and then quite aggressively touts that payoff round the media marketplace looking for interest. Basically, I believe it would be beneficial to LHC to adopt the approach that the BBC has undertaken. Think about the 'customer'. Just make an introductory home page that is 'idiot friendly'. Face it, most users hear of a project like this and think...'ok...I'll go to the website'. If it is too complicated they then think 'why bother'. Make the homepage simpler with 1,2,3 instructions like the BBC site did and watch your hosts grow through the roof. It's easy at this point . Once you realize how great the potential is for so many computer users out there... Founder of BOINC group Objectivists: Rational people crunching data for science. |
