Hi all,

As you may know we are working on putting all LHC-related projects under the combined LHC@Home project. The idea is to provide a single entry point for everyone who wants to participate in helping CERN research.

We have now set up a beta app for ATLAS on LHC@Home so we invite you to try it and provide feedback on the ATLAS message board. You need to enable beta apps in your project preferences to get these WU.

Currently the WU there are just for tests and we don't use the results but soon we will proceed with real WU. Once everything is working well there we will ask everyone to migrate over to LHC@Home and stop sending work to the ATLAS@Home project.

Credit will not be lost! We will move all the credit accumulated here to LHC@Home once all the remaining tasks are finished. To make this easier it would be very helpful if your email address you register with is the same on both projects, since this is the only way to match the accounts on each project.

Happy continued crunching,
The ATLAS@Home team

Will the consolidation reduce the huge inital download (>200 MB/WU)?

Will we be able to select just one experiment? Or jobs will be assigned randomly?

Cheers,
Jiri.

We plan to run exactly the same WU as we do here, so nothing will change. Normally the input data should be a few MB, but the current WU unfortunately have a much larger set.

Yes, you can configure which experiment to run in the project preferences.

Hello,
To be clear:
1: We go on LHC@home project: https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/
2: We create an account with same email than the Atlas@home one
3: Once done, we connect our user, in LCH@home preferences, we go to "Preferences for this project" and to have beta application, we enable "Run test applications?" and ATLAS simulation.
4: We add LHC@home in boinc and begin it.
Is it right ?
Thanks.

... nothing will change ...
... unfortunately ...

"Something" (what?) changed in December.
Is it just "fortune" to get a smaller starting set?

Smaller (much smaller) starting sets would be appreciated.
Be so kind as to check the WU configuration.

Right! Be aware that during the beta phase there may be bad WU or no WU at all. And there seems to be a problem right now getting ATLAS WU due to the large number of sixtrack WU in the queue - but it's good to see these kind of problems and sort them out before the consolidation.

In December we started a new batch of WU (task 10327233 as shown on the main page). Each task uses a different set of input data and this task has 200MB input files, which I agree is significantly larger than the previous WU. When we get future tasks for ATLAS@Home we will try to make sure the input data size is smaller.

There is no fixed deadline, we move when everything works :)

As you may have seen there are some scheduling issues on LHC@Home due to the large number of sixtrack tasks in the queue which makes it hard to get ATLAS tasks. The LHC@Home guys are working on it but this is the kind of unexpected issue that needs to be solved before moving over.

And what of our stinking badges? Will we keep them? Will we add on to them? Will our particles ever show, or just the plan old square as usual?

Badges will be moved too.

Do you mean the badges for parts of the detector (like the green one you have currently)? Those are not particles - I'll admit a solid square is not perfect but it's not easy to represent a huge piece of equipment in a tiny icon :)

I do not have a LHC@Home project account. To ensure an orderly transition of credits and badges, should I set up such an account or during the transistion will one be created for me over at LHC@Home project?

Hi , RaymondFO* ,

you have to create such an account , using the same email adress.
The name of the account can be changed if you want it but not the email adress to be sure automatically credits will be transfered.
